Biological Therapy and Crohn?s Disease

Crohn’s disease, which was up until recently considered a rare condition is becoming more frequent, and it is affecting more people every year especially in more developed countries. Life after the Lap Band: Chuck discusses family time

Chucks 100+ pound lap band weight loss is an inspiring story, but it gets even more inspiring when he discusses how he is now able to interact with his family.

He discusses the discomfort of being an obese man at family events, feeling as though people might judge him for his food choices. Now, minus 100 pounds, he loves going to family events and welcomes attention that he used to shun.

Life with his children has become more interactive and meaningful, and he discusses his wife and his shopping mall fashion shows and his daughter's desires for him to wear "skinny jeans" to look like Justin Beiber.

Finally, Chuck talks about how he hopes that his own lap band success story can inspire his wife as she begins her own weight loss surgery journey.

If you need help losing weight and would like to start your own weight loss journey, request your initial consultation with Weight Loss Surgical Center today.

11 Weight Loss Tips for 2011, Part 10: Treat Illnesses Appropriately

This is the tenth in an 11-part series of weight loss tips for 2011. Yesterday, we talked about visiting with healthcare providers about weight loss. Today, we’re talking about what to do when you get sick.

When you get sick, you feel miserable and don’t want to think about losing weight, exercising, dieting, journaling or any of that other stuff we’ve been discussing over the past couple weeks. Here are four tips for treating your illness without sabotaging your weight loss.

  1. Return to liquids – even if you don’t feel like eating food, you need to keep yourself hydrated. This is especially important for people who have had gastric banding procedures, because they can’t drink as fast. It is important to drink sips of liquid, about every 10 minutes.
  2. Add sugar – You weren’t expecting that, were you? Sugar is important when you are sick, even for diabetics. If you are not eating your regular diet, sugar will help you maintain your blood sugar and energy levels.
  3.  Call your healthcare provider – Depending on what condition you are facing, you may need to take specific actions to help yourself recover more quickly. Call your primary care physician or other healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms or schedule an appointment.
  4. Don’t use it as an excuse – A few days down can really mess with your routine, and it can be difficult to re-motivate yourself. Once you start feeling better, decide how you are going to return to your weight loss plan. Plan how long you believe you’ll need before returning to regular eating and how long you’ll need before you are ready to start your physical activity or exercise plan again.

Illness is only a setback if you let it be. Certainly, you should take care of yourself, seek treatment, rest and nurse yourself back to health. Once you’re back on your feet, it’s time to get back to your weight loss plan.

At Weight Loss Surgical Center, we help people lose weight with adjustable gastric band surgery and a special focus on long-term support after surgery. If you would like to learn more about what we do, download our free kit of adjustable gastric band surgery information.

Initial Weight Loss Surgery Consultation Pricing Change

Initial Consultations at Weight Loss Surgical Center now cost only the specialist co-pay required by your insurer.

Previously, the initial consultation fee at Weight Loss Surgical Center was $50, up front, with refunds given to people whose insurance plans covered the visit.

"What many people don't realize is that an initial consultation is not just learning about laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding," said Douglas Palzer, CEO of Weight Loss Surgical Center. "It's a full medical visit, where we take a history and physical. Our healthcare providers evaluate your physical condition to determine if you would even qualify for weight loss surgery."

Information from that physical exam is given to our insurance team, who will research your plan and report back to you with everything you need to know to move forward with weight loss surgery on your insurance plan.

"Sometimes we hear from people who are concerned about the cost of getting started," said Palzer. "We hope that this change will encourage more people will visit with our healthcare professionals to learn how they can lose weight and get more of life."

For people who do not have insurance, the initial consultation price remains $50, and that amount is contributed toward your reduced cash surgery cost, which is $17,900, all inclusive, plus one year of follow-up care. Weight loss surgery financing is available for many people.

International Development Coordinating Group (IDCG) - Campbell Collaboration

Campbell has established a new group: the International Development Coordinating Group (IDCG)

URL: http://bit.ly/jFe9JM

"...The International Development Coordinating Group prepares, updates and disseminates systematic reviews of high policy-relevance focusing on social and economic development interventions in low and middle income countries. The Group provides editorial services and technical support to authors of Campbell reviews...."

This network of researchers, policy makers and practitioners will produce and disseminate systematic reviews of high policy relevance on the effects of international development interventions. Its scope covers social and economic development interventions which aim to improve the quality of life for people in low- and middle-income countries. This includes interventions in agriculture and rural development; banking and finance; transport, energy, water and sanitation infrastructure; social development; and governance.

The IDCG has grown out of Campbell's partnership with the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) seeks to "improve the lives of poor people in low- and middle-income countries by providing, and summarizing, evidence of what works, when, why and for how much". Professor Howard White, Alfred Deakin Research Institute, Australia and Executive Director of 3ie, and Professor Peter Tugwell, University of Ottawa, Canada are Co-Chairs of the Group.

It is committed to providing authors with the support necessary to complete Campbell reviews and will provide or arrange substantial technical assistance for reviewers, especially with respect to information retrieval, critical appraisal and statistical methods. We welcome the participation of researchers, students, practitioners, policy makers and service users. Any interested party can propose a title for a review, form a review team, and submit a protocol for a Campbell review to the Group.

Steps for registering systematic reviews with IDCG, see: http://bit.ly/jgXkFa

New titles are approved by our Advisory Board, an internationally representative group of experts in international development research, policy and practice. Protocols and reviews are also subjected to a rigorous peer assessment process. We solicit critiques from substantive, methodological, and information search specialists and seek the Editorial Board's approval before publishing protocol and review documents in the Campbell Library. The process of registering a review with our Group is as follows:

1. Authors contact Group secretariat to discuss proposed title and scope

2. Authors are asked to submit a title registration form for review

3. Once title agreed, authors are required to submit a protocol within 6 months of title registration. Protocols are then subject to rigorous peer review by International Development Group editors and the Campbell Collaboration Methods Group

4. Systematic review reports submitted to the Group are also subject to rigorous peer review.

For all enquiries regarding registration, please contact: bsnilstveit@3ieimpact.org

Financial support for reviews-in-progress

Financial support for reviews is expected to be available from on-going requests for proposals by organisations such as the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation(3ie), the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), among others.

11 Weight Loss Tips for 2011, Part 6: Exercise

This is the sixth in an 11-part series of weight loss tips for 2011. Yesterday, we talked about support groups for weight loss. Today, we’re talking about exercise.

Today we’re going to step up our talk about physical activity and discuss how exercise can help you lose weight.

A crucial part to any weight loss program – even a surgical weight loss program – is exercise. If you’re trying to lose 100+ pounds, though, you may need to start slow with simple physical activities and work your way up.

I’ve found some interesting internet sources to help you get started. Try hundredpushups.com, even if you can’t make it through five pushups. They have a plan to get you moving from whatever your current ability allows to a regular 100 pushup routine.

Along a similar vein or ramping things up, you could try c25k.com, where they take you from the couch to a 5K run in 9 weeks.

100 pushups? 5 kilometers? Does it sound impossible?

It is if you don’t try. But these popular sites start with realistic goals and give you a structure to build and improve your exercise ability.

If you need a more personal approach, consider joining a gym AND meeting with a physical trainer. Commercial gymnasiums make a lot of money on those of us who pay our monthly dues but never show up. It may cost some extra money, but at least schedule an initial session with a personal trainer to teach you how to use the equipment. Once you’re comfortable with it you will be much more likely to come back again and again.

While sitting at the beginning of a weight loss journey, exercise can be intimidating, but there are plenty of resources available to help you start small and work your way to a healthier lifestyle.

At Weight Loss Surgical Center, we help people lose weight with adjustable gastric band surgery and a special focus on long-term support after surgery. If you would like to learn more about what we do, download our free kit of adjustable gastric band surgery information.

Kansas, Missouri Near Top on Obesity Scale

Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation issued their annual obesity report today, and it ranked Kansas and Missouri in the top 20.

Missouri ranked as the 11th most obese state, while Kansas ranked 16th. The most obese states centered in the south. Mississippi ranked as the nation's most obese state.

Slightly more than 30 percent of Missouri residents are obese, placing the state just behind Michigan. 29 percent of Kansans are obese, more than doubling the amount of Kansans considered obese only 15 years ago.

Other states with Weight Loss Surgical Center LAP-BAND Clinics include Iowa, which ranked 20th, with 28.1% of its population being obese and Nebraska, which ranked 24th with 27.6% of its population being obese.

The report notes that adult obesity rates increased in 16 states this year and did not decline in any state. While four years ago only one state had obesity rates above 30 percent, today 12 states now have obesity rates over 30 percent. Obesity rates exceed 25 percent in more than two-thirds of states.

Much more detailed information about the report can be found at the Trust for America's Health website.

11 Weight Loss Tips for 2011 (Recap)

We started off January with 11 individual weight loss tips for 2011, and now here they are, re-presented in one handy list.

  1. Make a weight loss plan. Write it out, and stick to it.
  2. Drink water for better weight loss. Keep yourself hydrated and healthy.
  3. Control your portions to reduce caloric intake. Reduce portions before you begin eating, so you are not tempted.
  4. Get moving with light physical activity to burn excess calories. Even fidgeting burns calories, so get up off the couch and do something.
  5. Join a weight loss support group. If you can't find one you like then work on developing your own unique support system.
  6. Exercise to burn fat. Set a goal, start slow, and increase your effort over time.
  7. Eat plenty of protein. It makes you feel fuller longer and nourishes your body.
  8. Keep a journal of your weight loss efforts. You might be surprised what you actually eat in a single day.
  9. Visit with your doctor about your weight loss goals. Remember that weight loss is not only cosmetic; losing weight can help you improve your health.
  10. Treat illnesses without letting them become an obstacle. If a cold or flu knocks you down, treat it and then get back on the plan.
  11. Reward yourself for weight loss successes. Find non-food motivators and use them to push yourself forward.

Immigration in the News

Immigration is much in the news these days. The law that was passed in Arizona will, according to many legal experts, certainly be challenged as unconstitutional, and one hopes that the courts will strike it down. Perhaps we should all do as Linda Greenhouse suggested: wear buttons that say "I could be illegal." Greenhouse [...]

Why you should vaccinate your preteen girl against HPV

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recently reported that only about half of teen girls in the U.S. have received the human papillomavirus vaccine. The need for this vaccine is clear. About 20 million people, most in their late teens and early 20s, are infected with human papillomavirus.
HPV infection can cause cervical cancer. Each year [...]

Infographic on inactivity, health risks and obesity

From medicalbillingandcoding.com, this infographic is a bit dramatic, but it has some interesting information about the negative health consequences of sitting all day.

The most staggering claim in the inforgraphic is the item on obesity rates doubling for people who have desk jobs. Also, note that the piece is well-cited, with a whole bunch of useful resources at the bottom if you're interested in more detailed reading.
